The Pizzeria’s first year was chaotic. I was up by 3:45 A.M. to do the baking, worked through the lunch hour, had a quick nap and then worked again until 11:00 P.M. The dining room was packed all the time except for a lull in the middle of the afternoon and I was one busy lady.
My allergies could not have made their come-back at a more unfortunate time. I had been allergy-free since my teens but something had triggered their return and it was extremely inconvenient. I knew it was something I was ingesting and wracked my brain for what it could be. Until I figured it out I had to wear rubber gloves over my hands, they were covered with an unsightly and very painful exzema.
I soon realized what had triggered the allergies; I had been sent a different brand of birth control pills and had started using them the month before. All I had to do was stop taking them and my poor swollen hands would be able to work again. I went to a doctor on the mainland and got myself fitted with a diaphragm, then stopped taking the Pill.
Almost immediately my allergies abated and almost immediately I was pregnant. Oh dear, Mac and I had agreed not to even THINK about having a baby for at least five years. I didn’t say anything to Mac until I was positive, but by the way my stomach was roiling every morning I was pretty sure were going to have a baby. I was a bit nervous about telling him, I didn’t know how he was going to react to the thought of being a father!
I needn’t have worried, as soon as I broke the news he got a big silly grin on his face. I had just taken up a cast iron frying pan to make scrambled eggs and he took it from me tenderly, saying, “ let me help you with that, it’s heavy you know!”.
I wondered if Mac was going to come to work every morning at 3:45 to lift the massive bowl filled with heavy dough onto the counter for me? That never happened, but each time I went near that cast iron frying pan at the house he was right there to help me with it!
